Two Louisiana men have been found guilty in a federal case centered on a multimillion-dollar life insurance fraud scheme.
A federal jury convicted Calvin Kemp, 60, of Gonzales, and Chevez Robillard, 33, of Baton Rouge, on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Federal prosecutors said the pair used the stolen identities of three individuals to obtain multiple life and accidental-death insurance policies totaling roughly $4.25 million. The premiums were allegedly paid through a bank account linked to a company known as Vision Investment Group.
Authorities say Kemp claimed he worked with music artists and used that story to explain why he was securing the insurance policies.
The investigation eventually connected to the 2022 k*lling of Duquares Smith in Baton Rouge. Police say detectives discovered a life insurance policy had been taken out on Smith before his death, and further investigation uncovered several additional policies. Due to the scale of the alleged fraud, the case was referred to the FBI.
According to Baton Rouge Police, investigators believe both Kemp and Robillard were involved in Smith's death. Despite that, officials say the federal fraud convictions are expected to be the final court outcome in the case.
