24-year-old Tommy Morrison overcame a 30lb weight disparity to pick up the vacant WBO heavyweight title when he outpointed George Foreman, 20 years his senior, at the Thomas and Mack Center #OnThisDay in 1993.

Judge Jerry Roth, who gave Morrison the first nine rounds and scored it 118-109, while Patricia Jarman and Dalby Shirley each had it 117-110.

Foreman thought he was well ahead on points entering the 12th round and played with Morrison in the final three minutes.

"I said, 'It's so brave of this guy to go this long, I'm not going to knock him out in the 12th round,'" Foreman said.

"I let him off the hook. I mean, when I got in the ring tonight, I hit him with a 1-2, and he buried his chin on my chest, and I felt sorry for him. When that happens, it's time to get out. He fell on me as if to say, 'Daddy.' I think all the fighters know it: 'Foreman will let you go.'

"But I'm glad it happened like that, because I was doing something decent. I saw some champions sitting out there, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe, and maybe they learned something. It will teach them they don't need all that killer stuff, the animosity. That's probably the last contribution I'll make to a sport that needs some honour."

Morrison did not reply with venom. "He said he let me off the hook?" Morrison said. "God bless him."
