Ford's very first Mustang was sold by mistake, to an airline pilot in Canada, three days before the car officially went on sale.

The white convertible stood beside the road outside a St. John's, Newfoundland, dealership, meant only to draw attention. Captain Stanley Tucker persuaded a salesman to make a deal. Getting the car back proved harder. Tucker turned Ford down, keeping it for almost two years before agreeing to trade Mustang No. 1 for Mustang No. 1,000,000.

Those mounting numbers hide a few close calls. With drivers lining up for gasoline, the downsized 1974 Mustang II found nearly 386,000 buyers in its debut year. By the late '80s, Ford had a front wheel drive coupe lined up to replace the boxy Fox body Mustang. Fans flooded Ford with letters demanding it reconsider. Their pushback helped preserve the Mustang, while the proposed replacement reached showrooms under another name: Probe.

On August 8, 2018, Michigan marked another milestone: Mustang No. 10,000,000, a Wimbledon White V8 convertible honoring Tucker's original. That year, Ford also announced plans to phase out its traditional sedans in North America. Ford was changing course. The Mustang was coming with it.
