𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 are automatic thought patterns that twist reality. The brain isn't lying on purpose — it genuinely believes what it's telling itself. And for kids whose emotional regulation is still developing, these distortions don't just cause momentary distress. They can harden into core beliefs:

    "𝘐'𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩."

    "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴."

    "𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭."

Left unchecked, that's the foundation anxiety builds on.

That's why I created a clear and simple infographic to show exactly what's going on inside an anxious kid's mind.

    It covers:

10 common cognitive distortions fueling kids' anxiety

General strategies to start untwisting those thoughts

Here's a quick taste of the distortions to watch for:

𝐀𝐥𝐥-𝐨𝐫-𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: "𝘐 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨, 𝘐'𝘮 𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦."

  • If a yellowjacket nest turned up in the lawn this month, mark it with a flag, keep the mower and the dog away, and wait: the colony is at its biggest and meanest right now, but in most of the country it dies at the first hard freeze, the queens leave to winter under bark, and the nest is never used again. Fill the hole in November. The exterminator is for the nest by the back door or the one in the wall of the kids' room, not the one at the back of the lot.

October is the yellowjacket's month. The workers have switched from hunting insects to scavenging sugar, which is why they're in the soda can, on the cider doughnut and over the trash can lid. Cover drinks, pour the soda into a clear cup, keep the lid on the can, and don't swat; a crushed yellowjacket releases a scent that calls the others.

The rest of the card, in the order you'll meet them. Paper wasps on the porch rail are mellow unless the nest is grabbed; their combs are empty by November. The bald-faced hornet's gray paper ball shows up in the maple the week the leaves drop, and it's abandoned by then; leave it, or bag it on a freezing night. The European hornet, big and orange, is the one at the porch light after dark and chewing bark on the lilac in September; it's the only true hornet established here, since the northern giant hornet found in Washington in 2019 was declared eradicated in 2024. Mud daubers build the mud organ pipes under the eaves, stock them with spiders and almost never sting; leave them. Fire ants build fresh mounds after fall rains across the South, and this is the second window of the year for baiting them, on a warm afternoon when they're foraging. The velvet ant, red fuzz on black, is a wingless wasp with a sting that earns the name cow killer; it isn't aggressive, so the rule is don't pick it up. And the cicada killer, the two-inch wasp that dug the burrows in the lawn in July, is gone until next summer and barely stings anyway.

The sting rule. One sting with local pain: wash it, ice it, an over-the-counter antihistamine, and keep an eye on it. Several stings, or any swelling of the face or throat, dizziness or trouble breathing: call 911, because that's anaphylaxis, and anyone with a known allergy carries the epinephrine auto-injector from April to the first frost. Stings kill about 60 people a year in the US, nearly all from allergic reaction. This is general safety information, not medical advice.

Know the species, know the nest, and know that most of this list is harmless if you leave it alone

  • Willie Nelson was too shy to get out of the car.

He drove to Patsy Cline's house with a new song, but stayed parked by the curb while a friend brought the demo inside. His singing didn't win Patsy over. She went ahead and recorded it anyway, and "Crazy" eventually earned the title of America's most played jukebox hit ever.

Kitty Wells had cleared the path in 1952 as the first woman to reach No. 1 on the country charts solo. Patsy followed right in her footsteps, then became a mentor in her own right to Loretta Lynn, a young coal miner's daughter.

Dolly Parton, who passed away this August, penned "I Will Always Love You" to bid farewell to her mentor Porter Wagoner. Elvis wanted to record the song himself, but Dolly wouldn't surrender half the rights.

Hearing George Strait's first single on the radio in 1981 gave Garth Brooks a vision for his own future. In 2008, it was Garth's turn to welcome Carrie Underwood into the Grand Ole Opry.

Willie Nelson, at 93, delivered another album this year and took to the road all summer.

  • Countries That Are Monarchies!

Did you know that not all monarchs have the same level of power? Some hold substantial governing authority, while others serve mainly as ceremonial heads of state.

Absolute monarchies: Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Oman and Qatar, where monarchs exercise extensive executive authority.

Semi-constitutional monarchies: Monarchs retain meaningful political powers alongside constitutional institutions. Jordan and Morocco are examples, though their systems differ.

Constitutional monarchies: Countries such as the UK, Japan, Sweden and Spain, where the monarch’s role is largely ceremonial and elected governments run day-to-day affairs.

The exact balance of power varies by country, and these categories can overlap depending on how each political system is classified.

  • Thirty-four. That's how many home microwave ovens Tappan built in 1955, the very first year of production. The RL-1 carried a $1,295 price tag, easily exceeding $10,000 in today's dollars. It required installation inside a wall and a 220-volt connection, while many shoppers were still wondering how they would actually use it.

Each generation that followed left a little less work for the cook. Amana's 1967 Radarange reached the countertop, running from a standard household outlet and selling for $495. Sharp's Carousel rotated the plate throughout cooking, saving owners from pausing midway to turn their dishes themselves. By 1975, microwaves outsold gas ranges in America, while Amana's Touchmatic replaced rotary dials with a keypad and glowing display.

Eventually, the cook could simply speak. The $59.99 AmazonBasics microwave arrived in 2018, accepting commands through Alexa and even automatically ordering more popcorn when supplies ran low. Now the wan AIChef Ultra promises another step: according to its maker, an internal camera follows the food as it cooks, while the appliance sets the cooking time and heat automatically.
